Im looking to iron out in my thoughts a few factors concerning the proof markings immediately after looking through the publish regarding the 1892 While using the “Oval P” marked receiver, and other Discussion board discussions on this subject. Immediately after 1905, Winchester began stamping barrels, and then receivers, With all the “WP” Winchester definitive evidence.

With regard into the “VP” in an oval on the underside of your barrel, I have discovered it on all models, beginning While using the Product 1873 (I have not looked for it over the Product 1866, but my guess is it as well was marked With all the “VP”). Winchester (within their catalogs) describes the process to the “VP” proof mark as follows:
Mainly, by proofing and incorporating the WP marking, along using an affidavit from Winchester certifying the process, they were being able to stay away from acquiring the rifles proofed outside the US. When the choice was created to proof mark the .22’s for Australia it became a common necessity for the entire rimfire line. If you or everyone else will get an opportunity you should evaluate the correspondence folder, when it doesn't pertain on the centerfire rifles which were being now becoming marked, it is vitally exciting looking at with the background with the .22 rimfire line.
I have already been entertained and broadened by the information contributed tirelessly by Bert and other authorities on this Discussion board, and will also try to contribute , but will seek to not comment on topics I dont find out about

For barrels & receivers manufactured right after 1905: Receivers possessing the “WP” evidence but no “WP” or “Oval P” proof around the barrel would point out the barrel was changed beyond Winchester using a pre-1905 barrel.
